"B" Coded B-26 Marauder based at Selfridge Field, MI

  .

Twin Engine bomber trainers typically displayed  the fuselage letter code on the nose and sometimes was repeated on the tail. However some aircraft did display the letter only on the aft portion of the fuselage.  As in the photo above the letter code sequence "BF3" can be broken down into three meaningful segments.  In this case "B" stood for the base name (i.e. Selfridge AAF) , "F" signified the Flight number, and "3" stood for the aircraft number within that Flight.
